August: Ann Lilly Jose

August 30, 2018

I have someone really cool on the blog this month! Ann Lilly Jose is a teenage author from India who is chasing her dreams by entering the publishing world at only fifteen years old. Here's a little bit about her:

Ann Lilly Jose is a teen author from Kerala, India. She started writing at the age of five. She was born on the 29th of June, 2003 in a village in Kerala. Being an only child, writing was something she had loved from early childhood. She writes novels, short stories, poems, epigrams and write-ups on certain general topics.

Here's my interview with Ann:

Can you tell me what inspired your latest novel? Where did the idea come from?

I am an only child and had always wanted to have a brother. Whenever I saw somebody having brothers, I would be jealous of them. But then I saw most of them not understanding the real value of having one. You only know the value of something when you don't have it, right? So I wrote my novel to bring out this relationship between a brother and a sister and what their love can do.

What does your workday look like?

I am a fifteen-year-old girl. I'm currently in grade ten. My school day is normally quite hectic to be honest. I leave for school at eight in the morning and come back by half past four in the evening. Once I come back, I have lots of homework and revisions to do that by the time I finish all of them, I will be exhausted. It's really a challenge to carry both together.

If you could co-write a novel with anyone, who would it be?

If I ever get a chance to co-write a novel with someone, I would like it to be with Ashish Bagrecha, an Indian writer who inspires lots of people through his writings. He also shares his birthday with me.

What advice would you give to aspiring authors?

Simple. Write, write, write and write. Never stop writing. No matter what people tell you, keep writing. There will be many people who ask questions like : "Hey, so you want to become JK Rowling?" and "Preparing to be the next bestseller?" Take it all as fun. Just keep going. You write for yourself and your readers.

What’s a genre you haven’t written but would like to try?

I haven't tried crime thrillers yet. But I love that genre and would love to try writing books in that genre.

What are your hobbies outside of writing?

I am a trained classical dancer. I sing at times. These days, I am a little more into photography.

If you had to go to dinner with one of your characters, who would it be, where would you go, and why?

I would go out with Robin from Her Twin's Crush because he is a hot, romantic kind of guy. We may go to a fancy dinner at a hotel near to a lake.

Are you a plotter or a pantser?

Both, I would say. I am plotter at first and start writing. But inend up writing a story different from the one I had planned. Sometimes, I write the same story. I would say it depends.

Tell me about your book.

My first book ENJOY TEENAGE is a self-help book for teenagers. We teenagers have different kinds of problems. But not everyone understands them. So I wanted to help them because I experience those problems too. My debut novel HER TWIN'S CRUSH is a young adult fiction novel on a brother-sister relationship. The main characters are twins named Joan and Johan. It's a story with lots of twists. You have to read to know more.

What’s your favorite book?

My favourite book by far is THIS IS NOT YOUR STORY by Savi Sharma, an Indian author. I would say that it's that one book which urged me to write and live my life in a better way.

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received?

Stop sharing your problems with people who don't care. Don't shout out all your problems to all those people around. Very few care. Find them. Once the connection is made, speak about your problems. Also make sure that you tell someone trusted. Don't keep it all to yourself.

(That's some good advice!)

What’s next? (book-wise)

My next book LOVELY PURPOSE, a collection of 50 epigrams will be releasing on the 4th of November on Kindle. Pre-orders will start soon. Follow me on my Instagram and blog to stay tuned.

Would you rather … not shower for a whole week or wear the same clothes (underwear included) for a whole week?

I would rather not shower for a whole week. And I have to say, I've done this in real life. Haha.

(She's already got writer life mastered!)

Where do you write and can we see?

I mainly write on my Instagram (@author.alj). Also on my blog. Of course, you can read. In fact, it's all for you to read.

Which of your characters is your favorite and why?

My favourite character is Johan from HER TWIN'S CRUSH. He is the brother in my mind. He is kind, gentle, loving and ready to sacrifice anything for his sister. He gives the best of advice too. So, he is my favourite character till date.

Thank you so much Ann for joining me on the blog this month! Good luck with your next book, and I can't wait to see what your future holds!
